Black Activist
After the election of the Whitlam Labour Government in December 1972, Eddie's life was frenetic.
With increased money for Aboriginal programs, he became involved in the Townsville Aboriginal and Islander Legal Service and the Health Service.
In 1975 Eddie was elected president of Yumba Meta, a housing association that purchased houses in Townsville with Commonwealth funds, and rented them to Aboriginal and Islander tenants.
However, when Mabo evicted tenants who'd fallen behind in their rent, his role as president caused considerable conflict within the organisation.
He received continual death threats and suffered bouts of anxiety about the safety of his family.
