The Townsville Conference
In August 1981, Townsville's James Cook University hosted a conference on the theme of 'Land Rights and the Future of Race Relations'.
It lasted almost four days, and was a major catalyst for the land rights challenge filed in the High Court of Australia the following year.
The conference brought together a group of people, who over the next 11 years were central to the preparation, conduct and ultimate success of the court action.
