Eddie Mabo's Evidence & The Hearsay Hurdle
The time came for the first Meriam witness to be called. At around three in the afternoon on Friday, the seventeenth of October 1986, Eddie Mabo took the stand.
He was to spend nine full days across the life of the case giving evidence, and was challenged two hundred and eighty nine times. Each of these objections was based on a technical rule which prevents 'hearsay' being given as evidence.
