Murray Island School
The Murray Islanders have a long history of formal government schooling.
In 1886, seven years after the annexation of the islands, the local authority promised the Meriam a school, if they built a classroom, and a teacher's residence.
Ten years later, the fourth grade class was doing compound arithmetic and an English missionary found the children's progress astonishing.
