On the 10th of October 1959, Ernestine Bonita Nehow married Edward Koiki Mabo, at the Methodist Church, Ingham, North Queensland.
If the island of Mer was Eddie's first love, out in the dusty western plains of Queensland, he began his second.
Like so many Aborigines and islanders before him, Eddie would find in his family a refuge from the harsh realities of life in North Queensland.
