'Much of the time I think he was totally isolated from the Island community, often over the question of religion, but of course, most people from the Islands regarded him as a dangerous trouble maker. The Islanders were fairly conservative in their political attitude. And here was this person who had gone to Townsville and was associated with dubious people and had all these new ideas and in a way they probably saw him as an absolute renegade and ratbag.'
