Eastern Island Hymn Number 145
The crossing of the Red Sea led by the prophet Moses out of the house of bondage, was the theme of one of countless hymns composed by Tommy Savage, a Torres Strait Islander who went to school at Mer. The many hymns composed in Western and Eastern Island languages by Islanders were compiled by an Islander priest into a hymn book about 1973:
'We praise your name above all gods
All earthly lords bow down to you.
Chorus
God, you sent Moses your servant,
He delivered all your children, the people of Israel.
He stood up and struck the Red Sea
And by Your blessing the sea divided.
Pharaoh rose up with his army
The sea was their grave forever.'
